the heart | post 9

“All the women whose hearts stirred them to use their skill spun the goats’ hair… All the men and women, the people of Israel, whose heart moved them to bring anything for the work that the LORD has commanded by Moses to be done brought it as a freewill offering.” Exodus 35:26, 29

God has given Moses the blue prints for his tabernacle. And there is something for the Israelite women to do. There is something for them to give — their skill. Taught to them by their mother, cultivated through childhood until this day, their ability to spin and weave was important, it was necessary in the building of the tabernacle, the dwelling place of the Almighty God.

The place where the LORD chose to meet with His people needed the hands of His women to make it a reality.

He needed their talent, their knowledge – which He had given to them so that they could bring it as a freewill offering to Him. Now, here’s where all this means something to you and I. In the same way, God wants your passion. Your desk job. Your love for words. Your authority. Your ability to teach. Your cubicle. Your green thumb. Your gift with numbers. Your beating heart. He wants it.

“He who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds.” Psalm 33:15

He created your heart. Not just your body. He hand-picked what would make you happy, what would give you purpose, what you would be good at, what would challenge you. Why? So that it could deeply satisfy you while you are pouring it forth for Him, through Him, and because of Him.

Maybe you don’t know what your passion is. Maybe you think you don’t have one. I did. But I wanted one. So I sat down with my MacBook and decided to find it. I found several. I challenge you to do the same. Take time to stop. Think about what makes you unusually joyful. What makes your heart jump to your throat when you talk (or rant) about it? Where do you find freedom? What’s that thing you do that fills minutes with purpose? Ask God to show you. Write them down. And then pursue the heck out of that stuff.

Because remember, He made your heart. And just as the women of Israel were given the opportunity to use their skill for His honor and the establishment of His kingdom, we – women of God with iPhones and minivans and mortgages and student loans and dentist appointments – we have been given unique heart cries that He is asking us to use, to offer, to extend.

So sign up for that race. Pack your family into a U-Haul because God has called you to move two states away. Keep getting up at 5:30 am. Slay that interview. Keep baking. Go to Africa for five years. Adopt that child. Write the book you keep putting off. Join the praise team. Learn Spanish.

Your heart is stirring. Listen to it. And offer it to your Father.

His kingdom needs you.
